Painting with Light: Poseidon
Poseidon was one of the twelve Olympian deities in Greek mythology. He is called the "God of the Sea" and protector of all waters and is also referred to as "Earth-Shaker" due to his role in causing earthquake. His weapon and main symbol is a trident which he could use to make earthquakes and shatter any object. He is the brother of Zeus, Hades, Demeter, Hera, Hestia, and Chiron. He was the second son of titans Cronus and Rhea. It is told that he was swallowed by Cronus at birth but later saved, with his other brothers and sisters, by Zeus. In another version he, like his brother Zeus, did not share the fate of his other brother and sisters who were eaten by Cronus. He was saved by his mother Rhea, who concealed him among a flock of lambs and to pretended to have given birth to a colt, which she gave to Cronus to devour. Poseidon is also known as Neptune. He is the second most powerful god on Olympus but would spend most of his time in the sea. When the world was divided in three Zeus received the sky, Hades received the underworld, and Poseidon received the sea.

Photographer Research: Lewis Hine
Lewis Hine was born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on September 26, 1874. He studied sociology at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and New York University. He was an American photographer who photographed immigrants on Ellis Island, child labor, World War I, and the construction of the Empire State Building. A camera that was given to him gave him the ability to record social injustice and labor abuses. Hine would get into the factories by posing as an insurance agent, bible salesman, postcard seller, etc. Once he was inside he would talk to the children and photograph them working. If he didn't get inside he would wait until they were leaving and photograph the children exiting the factories. His photographs bringing awareness to child labor conditions led to the passage of child labor laws. He died on November 3, 1940.

Photo Analysis
This artwork was created by Lucy Kim and is titled Dr. Melissa Doft, Plastic Surgeon 2. It was created in 2016. This artwork was created using oil paint, urethane resin, epoxy, fiber glass, wooden frame, and acrylic paint. It is 92 x 60 x 3 inches. The artwork is of a woman resting her head on her hand flipped in all different directions in varying shades of green. The color, shape, and texture are important in this photo. The color doesn't gradually go from light green to dark green it has clear lines to where the shades of green change. The texture isn't completely smooth, the womans facial features are defined. The shape is interesting because in some places there are only the woman's arm or part of her face, she isn't fully sculpted in each section. Creating the same woman over and over again throughout this piece unifies it. I like this piece of artwork because its different and its interesting to look at. The title makes sense with the piece because it is the woman in the artworks name.
